Background
Bridge is your go-to connection for all the government and community services seniors need. By teaming up with local governments, Bridge makes it easy for older adults to find, sign up for, and enjoy everything their community has to offer—from social support to fun senior center activities.
Problem
Signing up takes forever
Senior centers rely heavily on physical sign-up sheets for every event and activity. Whether it’s registering at the front desk, signing in for Bingo, checking into the library, or joining a Tai Chi class, seniors are repeatedly asked to fill out forms. This process is time-consuming and frustrating for seniors, creating unnecessary friction.
User Research
What seniors and staff from the senior centers had to say…
“Signing up takes forever. Doing it repeatedly makes it worse.”
“Locating specific information in a paper-based system can be slow and inefficient.”
“Sometimes I forget what I’m signing up for and I end up asking for help. ”
“Storing and archiving the sign up sheets is a challenge and takes up a lot of time.”
“The way the sign up process works is not friendly for people our age.”
Approach
Modernize the sign up process
Kiosks and key tags are an ideal solution for senior centers, enhancing accessibility, promoting independence, and fostering community engagement. They streamline services, reduce wait times, and enable seniors to quickly access what they need, allowing them to focus on their activities.
01
Touch screens
Touchscreen kiosk offers a simpler, more intuitive way for seniors to interact with technology, making it easier for them to learn and use, and promoting independence and engagement.
02
Key Tags
Key tags in a senior center provide convenience by enabling easy access to services and cashless payments. They streamline membership management, track participation for personalized services, and gather data to optimize programs and offerings.
Design Impact
Introducing a touchscreen kiosk with key tags at senior centers in Salem improved accessibility and independence for older adults by offering an easy way to check in, access events, and get information. The speed of the sign-up process significantly improved compared to the previous pen-and-paper system, reducing wait times and streamlining daily operations. The design prioritized clarity, large visuals, and simple navigation. Positive feedback suggests strong potential for scaling to other cities.
